Vehicle Escrow Scams via Zelle
Fraudulent vehicle sellers direct US buyers to fake escrow sites and then request Zelle payment to fund the escrow, disappearing with the instant transfer.

Vehicle escrow scams using Zelle exploit the same fake escrow template as other variants, but use Zelle's bank-to-bank branding to add another layer of apparent legitimacy. Buyers who agree to use an 'escrow' believe their funds are protected; the Zelle transfer into a fake escrow account is presented as safe because it appears to involve their bank.
Zelle is specifically requested for these scams because US buyers are very familiar with it, the transfer is instant, and there is no buyer protection for peer-to-peer payments to strangers.
How this scam works on Zelle
After initial listing contact, the seller introduces a 'buyer protection escrow' and provides a site URL. When the buyer is ready to fund the escrow, they are instructed to send the vehicle price via Zelle to a number or email address associated with the 'escrow company.' An automated confirmation arrives confirming the funds are held.
A few days later, either the vehicle tracking number provided is fake, or the buyer is told their payment is flagged and an 'insurance deposit' via additional Zelle transfers is needed to release the vehicle.
The entire operation — the fake escrow site, the confirmation emails, the tracking portal — is built to maintain the illusion until the Zelle funds are withdrawn.
Common red flags
- Escrow company suggested by the seller rather than chosen independently
- Zelle payment used to fund an escrow — Zelle has no escrow functionality
- The escrow website was registered recently or has a domain that mimics a real financial services brand
- Confirmation emails come from a non-official domain
- Post-payment insurance or upgrade fees requested via further Zelle transfers
- Seller declines to meet in person or allow the buyer to view the vehicle independently
How to protect yourself
- Never fund a vehicle escrow via Zelle — Zelle is not an escrow service
- Select and verify any escrow service independently before using it
- Inspect the vehicle in person before committing any payment
- Use a payment method with genuine buyer protection for high-value private purchases
- Verify the escrow provider's details via an independent search, not through the seller's link
- Treat any vehicle purchase that cannot be arranged with an in-person meeting as high risk
How to report it
- Report the fake escrow website to domain registrars and your national cybercrime authority
- Contact your bank and explain the Zelle transfer circumstances to request a fraud review
- File a report with the FTC and your state consumer protection office
Frequently asked questions
Is there any genuine Zelle escrow feature for vehicle purchases?
No. Zelle does not offer escrow functionality. Peer-to-peer Zelle payments go directly and immediately to the recipient with no hold or conditional release. Any portal claiming otherwise is fraudulent.
