WhatsApp job scams targeting Austrian residents typically promise flexible remote work for Austrian or German companies, then extract EUR deposits under the guise of equipment provisioning, training access, or Sozialversicherung registration fees. The scams are conducted in German and exploit Austria's competitive job market.
AMS (Arbeitsmarktservice Österreich) and Wirtschaftskammer Österreich both advise jobseekers to apply only through verified channels and never pay fees to obtain employment. Young job-seekers and career-changers are most frequently targeted.
How this scam works on Austria
A WhatsApp message offers EUR 1,500–3,000 per month for a data-entry or product-testing role with a named Austrian company. The message uses correct Austrian German and may reference a real company name.
During onboarding, the victim is asked to pay EUR for a company laptop to be shipped, a background-check service, or AMS registration processing. Once paid, communication ceases and the company denies any knowledge of the recruitment.
Some variants involve task-scam hybrids where early EUR payments arrive before larger deposits are demanded.
Common red flags
- Job offer arriving via WhatsApp without a formal application or interview process
- Request for EUR equipment deposit, training fee, or background-check payment
- Company name is recognisable but the offer does not appear on their official careers page
- All communication via WhatsApp only — no official company email or phone
- Payment requested via bank transfer to a private IBAN rather than a corporate account
- Role requires no experience and promises high hourly pay for simple tasks

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal for Austrian employers to ask for a deposit for work equipment?
No legitimate Austrian employer asks job applicants to pay for equipment before starting work. Equipment costs are a business expense, not a candidate cost.
