WhatsApp job scams are a well-documented fraud in Bangladesh, where the platform is the primary channel for personal and professional communication. Mass-broadcast messages offering garment-industry management roles, Gulf hospitality positions, and remote tech work are sent to thousands of numbers, with operators collecting fees from even a small fraction of recipients.
Bangladesh's enormous overseas workforce — with millions working in the Gulf, Southeast Asia, and elsewhere — makes overseas job offers particularly plausible and appealing. Fraudsters exploit this familiarity to make fake placements seem routine.
How this scam works on Bangladesh
Victims in Bangladesh receive a WhatsApp message offering a specific role with a salary in USD or AED — significantly above local wages. The 'recruiter' requests a CV, national ID scan, and an upfront processing fee via bKash for visa documentation or medical clearance.
Some scam operations go further: the victim is issued a fake visa and told to travel to a Gulf or Southeast Asian country, only to find the job does not exist. Others collect fees repeatedly for 'additional documentation' until the victim realises the placement will never materialise.
Data harvested from applicants — NID numbers, bank details, passport scans — is also sold or used for downstream fraud.
Common red flags
- Unsolicited WhatsApp message about an overseas or corporate job at a specifically named company
- Fee required before the job starts — for visa, medical, or registration
- Recruiter communicates only via WhatsApp and cannot be reached on a verifiable office number
- Offer letter contains the real logo of a well-known company but the contact details are personal phone numbers
- Any request to send NID or passport scans before a formal interview at a physical office
How to protect yourself
- Use only BOESL (Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited) or licensed BAIRA agencies for overseas placements
- Verify any offer letter with the named company's official HR team before paying
- Never pay any fee for a job offer — licensed Bangladesh overseas agencies operate under regulated fee structures
- Report suspicious WhatsApp recruitment numbers to BOESL and Bangladesh Police
How to report it
- Report to BOESL (boesl.gov.bd) or BAIRA for overseas recruitment fraud
- File a complaint with Bangladesh Police CID or the Cyber Tribunal with all WhatsApp messages
- Contact bKash fraud team to flag any payment recipient number
Frequently asked questions
What is BOESL and how does it protect Bangladeshi overseas workers?
BOESL (Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited) is a government-owned recruitment agency that handles official overseas placements and maintains a list of licensed private agencies under BAIRA. Using a BOESL or BAIRA-registered agency provides regulatory protection and recourse. Any recruiter not on these lists operating outside official channels should be treated with extreme caution.
