WhatsApp job scams targeting French residents have grown significantly, with Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr identifying them as one of the most frequently reported online employment frauds. Victims receive messages in fluent French offering work-from-home micro-task jobs with daily earnings of €80–€200, requiring no qualifications or experience.
The scams exploit French workers' familiarity with télétravail (remote work) and the gig economy, marketing themselves as compatible with existing employment. Criminal groups use French virtual phone numbers and culturally attuned scripts to avoid detection.
How this scam works on France
A WhatsApp message arrives: 'Bonjour, je recrute pour un travail à domicile flexible, jusqu'à €150/jour. Intéressé(e)?' The recipient is added to a Telegram group full of apparent French workers sharing earning screenshots.
Initial tasks — liking YouTube videos, leaving reviews in French — are unpaid or pay token amounts. After several days, the victim is told they qualify for better-paid tasks requiring a USDT deposit of €50–€500. The deposit appears as balance on a dashboard but is never withdrawable without further escalating deposits.
French victims have reported that criminal operators use colloquial French vocabulary and even reference French news events to appear local, making the initial approach particularly convincing.
