WhatsApp job scams are reported in Oman's large expat community and among Omanis seeking supplementary income. Fraudulent 'work from home' or 'online task' offers spread through community broadcast lists and family groups, promising daily income with no required qualifications.
The schemes exploit Oman's growing digital workforce aspiration and the normalisation of remote work, presenting themselves as legitimate online employment platforms.
How this scam works on Oman
A WhatsApp message — often forwarded by a genuine contact — announces vacancies for online tasks: product ratings, app reviews, or social media engagement. Interested individuals are added to a Telegram group and assigned initial tasks for which small payments are made.
Shortly after, a 'special task' is announced that requires a deposit to participate. Subsequent tasks require larger deposits. Earnings visible in the platform account cannot be withdrawn until additional fees are paid. The group and the platform then vanish with all deposited funds.
In Oman, these schemes often target domestic workers and blue-collar expats looking for ways to supplement modest wages.
Common red flags
- Unsolicited WhatsApp job offer forwarded through a shared group
- No formal employment contract or company registration details provided
- Deposit required to access any paying task
- Platform balance grows visibly but withdrawal is always blocked by a new condition
- Group chat populated with suspiciously similar 'success' testimonials
- Supervisor becomes evasive when withdrawal issues are raised
How to protect yourself
- Do not pay to earn — legitimate employers pay you without requiring deposits
- Warn the group admin and members if a fraudulent job offer enters a shared WhatsApp group
- Report recruiting numbers to Omantel or Ooredoo Oman's fraud teams
- Search the platform name with 'scam Oman' before participating
- Exit any group immediately if deposits are requested
How to report it
- Report to the Royal Oman Police Cybercrime Unit
- Report the number to your telecom operator (Omantel or Ooredoo)
- File a complaint via the Oman government complaint portal
Frequently asked questions
A friend forwarded me this job offer. Should I trust it more because it came from a friend?
Your friend was also deceived and forwarded the message in good faith. The source of a WhatsApp forward does not validate the offer. Apply the same scepticism as you would to any unsolicited job advertisement.
