WhatsApp job scams have become one of the most common financial frauds in Sri Lanka. Victims receive unsolicited messages advertising simple tasks — liking social media posts, writing reviews, or data entry — promising daily earnings that can be collected instantly.
The scheme is designed to move quickly: small genuine payments in the first day or two are followed by escalating deposit demands, exploiting the trust built during the initial phase.
How this scam works on Sri Lanka
A message arrives from an unknown number offering payment per task from home. The first tasks are simple and the payment is real. Then the platform introduces premium tasks that require prepaying a deposit to access higher-earning batches.
Deposits grow rapidly with the platform claiming each level unlocks larger returns. Withdrawal is always blocked by a new system fee or upgrade charge until the victim has lost their full deposit.
Operators use generic platform names and cycle through new WhatsApp numbers each week to avoid blocking.
Common red flags
- Unsolicited WhatsApp message offering paid tasks from an unknown number
- Legitimate-seeming initial payment followed by a premium upgrade deposit requirement
- Platform not listed on any app store and accessed only via a link
- Withdrawal blocked by repeated new fee requirements
- Job group chat full of apparent success stories that all use similar language
- No verifiable company name, address, or registration number
