WhatsApp job scams — where victims are recruited for fake online work such as rating apps, boosting posts, or completing surveys — frequently use gift cards as the payment vehicle for 'account activation fees,' 'training deposits,' or invented compliance requirements. Gift cards are chosen precisely because they are irreversible, untraceable after redemption, and widely available.
When gift cards appear in the context of an employment opportunity, they are almost universally a sign of fraud. No legitimate employer requires a new hire to purchase gift cards.
How this scam works on Gift Cards
The scam begins with an unsolicited WhatsApp message offering an easy work-from-home job — typically app rating, product reviewing, or social media boosting — with a daily pay of $100–$400 for minimal hours. After completing several unpaid 'training tasks,' the recruiter explains that to unlock real earnings or a higher-tier task set, the worker must 'activate' their account with a Google Play, iTunes, or Amazon gift card purchase.
The codes are provided to the recruiter via WhatsApp message or a form. The scammer redeems or sells the codes immediately. The promised earnings never arrive. Some victims are asked for escalating card values — told their first activation cleared but a higher amount is needed to access the 'premium task set' — before finally cutting off contact.
Common red flags
- Unsolicited WhatsApp message offering high-paying easy work from home
- Request for gift card purchase to 'activate' your account or access better tasks
- Recruiter who wants gift card codes sent by WhatsApp rather than through any official payroll system
- Daily earnings promise that seems unrealistically high for the task described
- First tasks unpaid; payment claimed only after an 'activation' fee
- Escalating gift card demands after initial codes are provided
How to protect yourself
- Recognise that no legitimate employer ever asks new hires to purchase gift cards
- Treat any WhatsApp job offer from an unknown number as suspect
- Verify any company offering online work by checking company registration and official website independently
- Never share gift card redemption codes with anyone for any employment-related reason
- Report the WhatsApp number and account to WhatsApp and your national fraud agency
How to report it
- Report the WhatsApp number using the in-app report feature (open chat > three dots > Report)
- File a report with your national cybercrime agency including the WhatsApp number and conversation screenshots
- Contact the gift card issuer (Google, Apple, Amazon) immediately — some issuers can flag unredeemed codes
Frequently asked questions
Can gift card purchases for a job scam be refunded?
Once gift card codes are redeemed — which typically happens within minutes of receipt — the funds are gone. Some issuers may be able to block an unredeemed code if you contact them immediately. Reporting quickly gives the best chance, but recovery is rarely successful.
