Instagram Impersonation Scams
Fraudsters impersonate Instagram with fake account-verification alerts, copyright violation warnings, and blue-badge offers to steal account credentials and personal information.
Last reviewed: 1 June 2026
Instagram has hundreds of millions of active users, many of whom have built communities, businesses, or personal brands on the platform. The threat of losing access to an account — through suspension, a copyright strike, or a hacking claim — is therefore a powerful lever for scammers.
Fake Instagram security alerts typically mimic the platform's design to convince you to enter your credentials on a phishing page. More targeted scams direct messages to accounts offering blue verification badges, sponsorship deals, or warning of imminent copyright action, all requiring you to hand over your login details to 'resolve' the issue.
Instagram and its parent company Meta are the victims of this impersonation. Understanding how Instagram genuinely handles account issues is your best protection.
How scammers impersonate it
- Sending phishing emails or DMs with Instagram branding claiming your account is at risk of suspension
- Warning of a copyright violation that will result in account deletion unless you verify via a link
- Offering a verified blue badge in exchange for your login credentials
- Creating fake Instagram login pages to harvest usernames and passwords
- Sending fake 'suspicious login' alerts directing to phishing pages
- Impersonating Instagram's support team via direct messages from look-alike accounts
What the real organisation never does
- Offer a verification badge in exchange for your login details through a DM or unsolicited email
- Ask for your Instagram password through a direct message or third-party link
- Require you to log in through a link sent in a DM to resolve a copyright or security issue
- Threaten to delete your account unless you send personal information via a message
- Ask for payment via gift cards to restore your account
Common red flags
- DM or email claiming your account will be deleted unless you verify immediately via a link
- Offer of a blue verification badge through a DM — official verification is applied for through Instagram's own settings
- Urgency — 'you have 24 hours to appeal or your account will be permanently removed'
- Link in a message or email that does not go to instagram.com
- Account offering support has a different username from the official @instagram or @meta accounts
- Request for your username and password, or a code sent to your phone
- Sponsorship offer from a brand that asks you to log in through a link to confirm participation
Sanitized example messages
Illustrative, sanitized examples. Personal details are replaced with placeholders such as [phone number] and [fake link].
Email: 'Your Instagram account has been reported for copyright infringement. Appeal at [fake link] within 24 hours to avoid deletion.'
DM: 'Congratulations! You have been selected for Instagram Verified. Complete the process at [fake link] using your credentials.'
Email: 'We detected unusual login activity. Secure your account at [fake link] immediately.'
How to verify
- Check your Instagram account directly through the official app — account issues appear in your notifications and settings
- Genuine Instagram emails come from @mail.instagram.com — check the full sender address
- The official verification application process is found in your Instagram account settings under 'Request verification'
- Contact Instagram Support only through the Help option in the app, not through a link in an email
- Enable two-factor authentication in your Instagram account settings to protect against credential theft
What to do if you're targeted
- Do not enter your credentials on any page you reached through a link in a message
- If your credentials were entered on a fake page, change your Instagram password immediately and revoke access to suspicious third-party apps
- Report the phishing message or account using Instagram's in-app reporting tools
- Enable two-factor authentication if you have not already done so
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a verified badge through a DM offer?
No. Instagram's verification process is conducted entirely within the app through your account settings. Any DM or email offering a badge in exchange for credentials is a scam.
I logged in through a link in an email. What should I do?
Change your Instagram password immediately through the official app, check connected apps in your settings and remove any you do not recognise, and enable two-factor authentication.
How do I tell if an email is really from Instagram?
Check the full sender email address — genuine Instagram emails come from @mail.instagram.com. You can also cross-reference by checking 'Emails from Instagram' in your app's security settings, which shows all recent genuine emails from the platform.
