Venmo Impersonation Scams
Scammers impersonate Venmo with fake 'payment received' alerts and spoofed customer support numbers found through search engines. The real Venmo will never call you unprompted or ask you to send a payment to 'reverse' or 'unlock' funds.

Venmo's peer-to-peer design, where payments feel instant and personal, makes it a useful tool for several distinct scams. Because Venmo has no widely published phone support line, scammers post fake customer service numbers online that show up in search results — victims searching for help end up calling a criminal instead.
Other common tactics include fake 'you've received a payment' notifications with a link to 'claim' the funds, and overpayment scams where a buyer sends a payment (often from a stolen account, which is later reversed) then asks the seller to refund the 'extra' amount — leaving the seller out of pocket once the original payment is clawed back.
Venmo is the victim of this impersonation. Genuine Venmo support is only accessible inside the app, and no legitimate process ever requires you to send money to receive money.
How scammers impersonate it
- Posting fake Venmo 'customer support' phone numbers that appear in search engine results
- Sending fake 'payment received' texts or emails with a link to 'claim' funds
- Sending a payment (often from a compromised account) then asking for a refund of an 'overpayment'
- Calling and posing as Venmo security, asking victims to send a payment to 'verify' or 'unlock' their account
- Creating phishing pages that mimic the Venmo login screen
What the real organisation never does
- Call you out of the blue about your account
- Ask you to send a payment to 'verify', 'unlock', or 'reverse' a transaction
- Ask for your PIN, password, or one-time passcode over the phone
- Require you to click a link to 'claim' a payment that was sent to you
- Guarantee a payment is safe simply because it shows as 'received' before it has fully settled
Common red flags
- A 'customer support' phone number found via a general web search rather than inside the app
- Any instruction to send money in order to receive money
- A buyer overpaying and asking for the difference to be refunded outside Venmo
- A text or email link used to 'claim' a payment instead of checking the app directly
- Pressure to act quickly before checking your actual Venmo balance
Sanitized example messages
Illustrative, sanitized examples. Personal details are replaced with placeholders such as [phone number] and [fake link].
Fake support call (from a number found via search): 'This is Venmo security — to unlock the funds pending on your account, please send a small confirmation payment to this address.'
Message from a buyer: 'I accidentally sent you $[amount] too much — can you send the difference back right away?'
How to verify
- Access Venmo support only through the Help section inside the official app
- Check your actual balance and transaction history in the app, not through a text or email link
- Never send a payment as a condition of receiving or 'unlocking' another payment
- Be highly suspicious of any overpayment — confirm the original payment has permanently cleared before refunding anything
What to do if you're targeted
- Do not send any payment to 'verify' or 'reverse' a transaction
- Report suspicious accounts or payments through the Venmo app
- If you sent money to a scammer, report it to Venmo support and to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
Frequently asked questions
I found a Venmo support number online and called it — is that safe?
Be cautious. Scammers post fake support numbers that rank highly in search results. The safest way to reach Venmo support is through the Help section inside the official app, not a number found via a general search.
A buyer sent me too much money and wants a refund — should I send it back?
Wait until you are certain the original payment has fully and permanently cleared, and consider that it may have come from a stolen account and later be reversed. If in doubt, do not refund the difference and contact Venmo support first.
