Is a Venmo or Apple Pay request from a stranger a scam?
Almost always. Unsolicited payment requests or transfers from people you don't know are a well-known fraud method — do not send money.

Explanation
Payment apps such as Venmo, Apple Pay, and similar services allow anyone with your username, phone number, or email to send or request money. Scammers use this in several ways: they send a fake 'accidental' transfer and then ask for it back (the original payment later bounces or is reversed); they send a payment request with a note that sounds like a bill you might owe; or they contact you claiming a mutual friend sent you their payment details.
Transfers made through these apps are generally treated as authorised and are hard to reverse. Before sending anything, verify the request through a direct call to the person you believe sent it — using a number you already have, not one provided in the message. If someone you don't know requests money, decline and block.
Common red flags
- Stranger sends you money and immediately asks for a refund
- Payment request with a note implying you owe something you don't recognise
- Someone contacts you via a separate channel saying they 'accidentally' sent to you
- Request to send money quickly to avoid a 'problem'
- The profile is new, has no photo, or was created recently
- Pressure to act before you verify with anyone
What to do now
- Do not send money to or accept money from strangers on payment apps
- If you received an 'accidental' payment, contact the app's support — do not send your own money back directly
- Decline and report any unexpected request
- Verify through a direct call using a number you already have before doing anything
- Contact your bank or the app's support if you already sent funds
Frequently asked questions
What if the request note mentions someone I know?
That person's account may have been compromised, or the scammer may have found their name from social media. Call the friend directly before sending anything.
Can the app reverse a payment I was tricked into sending?
Most peer-to-peer payment apps treat payments as final once sent. Report immediately through the app and contact your bank if the funding source was a linked card or bank account.
