What the scammer wants
To trick you into sending real money by showing you a fake or manipulated confirmation message, when no funds were actually received into your account.
Red flags in the message
- A 'received' confirmation you did not expect from someone you do not know
- Immediate follow-up asking you to reverse or 'send back' money
- Emotional pressure, urgency, or appeals to religious sentiment
- The sender cannot confirm the transaction code or your registered name
- The balance in your M-Pesa wallet did not actually increase
A safe response
Always check your actual M-Pesa wallet balance — not just the SMS — before sending anything. A legitimate reversal is handled by M-Pesa customer care, not by the recipient sending money back.
What not to send
- Any cash back to the requester
- Your M-Pesa PIN
- Personal account confirmation
What to do if you already replied
- Contact the official M-Pesa customer care line to verify whether the transaction was genuine
- If you sent funds, report to M-Pesa support and to the Communications Authority or equivalent body
- Block and report the number
Evidence to preserve
- Screenshot the full message or call details
- Note the sender number, email, or profile
- Save any links (without clicking) and payment details
- Record dates and times
