The AARP Fraud Watch Network is a non-membership, free resource operated by AARP that aims to equip older Americans and their families with knowledge to recognise, avoid, and respond to fraud. The network distributes real-time fraud alerts, publishes consumer guides, and operates a free helpline at 1-877-908-3360 staffed by trained fraud specialists who can talk through a suspected scam and advise on next steps. The helpline is available to anyone, regardless of AARP membership.
The network runs a peer support programme called AARP Fraud Watch Network ReST (Resilience, Strength, and Time), which connects recent scam victims with trained volunteers who have themselves experienced fraud. This peer component recognises that fraud victims often experience shame, embarrassment, and grief that make conventional support services difficult to access. The programme helps victims process the emotional impact and rebuild confidence.
For reporting purposes, AARP Fraud Watch does not serve as an official reporting centre; consumers who have lost money should file a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov, with their state attorney general, and with IC3 if cybercrime is involved. AARP lobbies Congress on fraud-related legislation and publishes an annual 'Fraud Fighter' report ranking the most prevalent fraud types affecting older Americans.
