Legitimate airdrops distribute free tokens to wallet holders, often as a marketing tool or to reward early adopters. Airdrop scams mimic this mechanic to steal funds.
Common variants include: directing users to a fake airdrop claiming website where connecting the wallet triggers a drainer contract; requiring a small 'gas fee' or 'activation fee' payment that lines the scammer's pocket; or sending unsolicited tokens to wallets that, when interacted with, execute malicious contract code.
Airdrop scams proliferate on Twitter/X, Discord, and Telegram, often through compromised accounts of legitimate crypto projects — adding false credibility. The lure of free money creates the urgency and excitement that causes people to skip careful verification steps.
