Crypto Romance Scam
A long-running fraud where scammers build fake romantic relationships to manipulate victims into sending large amounts of cryptocurrency.
Also known as: romance investment scam, pig butchering, crypto love scam

Crypto romance scams combine traditional romance fraud with cryptocurrency investment deception. The scammer makes contact through dating apps, social media, or messaging platforms, builds trust over weeks or months through daily contact, and eventually introduces a cryptocurrency 'investment opportunity.' Because crypto transactions are irreversible and difficult to trace internationally, it is the payment method of choice.
Variants include pig-butchering (building a relationship specifically to introduce a fraudulent trading platform) and simpler romance scams where the victim is asked to send crypto directly to help the scammer with a fabricated emergency. The emotional manipulation involved makes these among the most psychologically damaging financial frauds.
Victims should be aware that no romantic partner met online should ever request cryptocurrency, introduce investment platforms, or ask for help bypassing exchange withdrawal limits. Discussing the relationship with a trusted friend or family member before any financial transaction is one of the most effective protections.
