Future Faking
A manipulation tactic in which a scammer makes elaborate, convincing promises about a shared future to keep the victim emotionally invested.
Also known as: false future promises, phantom relationship promises
Last reviewed: 10 June 2026
Future faking involves a scammer constructing a detailed, emotionally compelling vision of a shared future with the victim — plans to visit, to move in together, to marry, to build a business — that they have no intention of delivering. These promises serve as emotional anchors that keep the victim engaged and prevent them from walking away when the relationship feels strained or financial requests seem odd.
The future faking persona is often elaborately maintained: the scammer discusses specific apartments, names for children, holiday destinations, and retirement plans. Victims invest heavily in these imagined futures, which makes each postponement or setback feel like a temporary obstacle rather than evidence of fraud.
When the eventual reveal comes — either through the victim discovering the deception or the scammer disappearing — the loss felt is not only financial but also the grief of an imagined life that never existed.
Examples
- An online partner describes exactly which neighbourhood they will live in together once their overseas contract ends, referencing specific local restaurants and schools for their planned children.
- A scammer sends virtual house listings and discusses renovation ideas with a victim they have never met in person.
