Tech renewal scam
A fake subscription renewal notice — commonly impersonating well-known tech or security brands — that tricks victims into calling a number and giving remote access to their device.
Also known as: Geek Squad scam, subscription renewal scam, PayPal invoice scam

Tech renewal scams (sometimes called 'Geek Squad scams' after a frequently impersonated brand) arrive as emails or browser pop-ups claiming the victim's antivirus subscription, computer support plan, or software licence has auto-renewed for a large sum and will be charged unless they call to cancel.
The email looks official and includes a phone number. The recipient, alarmed at an unexpected charge, calls the number and reaches a fake 'support agent' who asks for remote access to 'process the refund'. Once inside the device, the fraudster steals financial credentials, installs malware, or directly transfers money while maintaining the fiction of processing a refund.
Legitimate subscription renewals do not require you to call and provide remote access. Verify any such notice by logging into the actual service on a browser — never by using the contact details in the email.
