Number spoofing scam bait refers to fraudulent online ads, Google Business Profile listings, or directory entries that display a telephone number controlled by scammers instead of the genuine business. A consumer searching for a bank, utility, airline, or government agency and clicking a paid advertisement or a fraudulent listing may reach a scammer who is fully briefed to pose as the company. The victim believes they have reached the real organisation and hands over account details, card numbers, or remote-access permissions.
This attack is particularly effective because the victim takes the initiative: they search for the real company and believe they found it. The psychological pressure of 'I found this myself' overrides normal caution. Fraudulent ads can appear above genuine search results, and Google Business Profiles can be hijacked to change the listed phone number.
Consumers should use the phone number printed on their bank card, official statements, or the company's official website rather than numbers found through search-engine advertisements. When clicking a search result, verify the domain in the URL bar before dialling any number shown on the page.
