ScamShield is a free mobile application developed by the Open Government Products team in partnership with the Singapore Police Force (SPF). Available for iOS and Android, it uses a continuously updated database of scam phone numbers and message patterns to automatically filter incoming calls and SMS messages identified as potential scams. Filtered messages are moved to a junk folder; blocked calls are silently rejected and logged.
The app incorporates a machine-learning classifier that analyses message content to detect patterns associated with job scams, loan scams, government impersonation, and other prevalent types. Users can also manually report suspicious messages directly through the app, which feeds new intelligence back into the database for the benefit of all users.
To use ScamShield effectively, consumers should install it, grant the required permissions, and keep it updated. They can check any suspected scam number at scamshield.gov.sg or by calling the ScamShield helpline. If money has already been lost, ScamShield is not the reporting channel; victims should call the SPF anti-scam hotline at 1800-722-6688 or file a police report online at police.gov.sg.
