Telegram's permissive channel policies and bot infrastructure have made it a key coordination layer for account opening fraud operations. Fraudsters use private channels to advertise 'easy money' opportunities that turn out to be money mule recruitment, and to trade stolen identity documents needed to pass verification checks at financial services providers.
Victims may be recruited directly or may have their stolen data traded in Telegram marketplaces without their knowledge, only discovering the fraud when financial or legal consequences materialise.
How this scam works on Telegram
Bot-operated Telegram channels broadcast advertisements for part-time remote jobs that pay recipients to receive and forward bank transfers. Applicants are asked to submit photos of their ID documents 'for employment verification' — data which is actually used to open accounts in their name or sold to operators who do so.
Separate channels operate as identity document markets, selling packages of stolen personal data categorised by country, age, and document type. Buyers use these packages to complete the know-your-customer checks required to open bank accounts, cryptocurrency wallets, or payment processor accounts that are then used for money laundering.
Some Telegram bots walk operators through the account opening process, cross-referencing the stolen data against common security questions to prepare answers for identity verification calls.
Common red flags
- Telegram channel advertising high pay for simply receiving and forwarding bank transfers
- Job offer requesting ID documents as part of a remote employment application
- Channel selling 'fullz' (complete identity packages) or similar data bundles
- Bot that offers to 'verify' your identity in exchange for a fee
- Unexpected bank communications about an account you did not open
- Tax notifications for income you did not earn
How to protect yourself
- Never submit ID documents or financial details in response to Telegram job advertisements
- Refuse any offer that involves receiving money into your account and forwarding it elsewhere — this is money muling and is illegal
- Set your Telegram privacy to prevent strangers from adding you to groups or channels
- Monitor your credit report and set up fraud alerts with your bank
- Report unsolicited Telegram channels offering financial 'opportunities' to Telegram's abuse team
- Use a unique, complex password and two-step verification on financial accounts to slow fraudulent access
How to report it
- Report the offending Telegram channel or bot at telegram.org/faq_spam or via the in-app report function
- Report to your national financial intelligence unit (e.g. FinCEN in the US, NCA in the UK) if organised fraud is suspected
- Notify the financial institution if you suspect an account was opened in your name and request immediate closure
Frequently asked questions
Am I liable if a fraudulent account is opened in my name?
In most jurisdictions you are not automatically liable for fraudulent accounts, but you must report them promptly. Delay can complicate investigations. File reports with the relevant financial regulator and the fraud team at the institution as soon as you discover the account.
