App Store Subscription Trap Scams on Telegram
Telegram bots and channels direct users to download apps that immediately charge high-value subscriptions through Apple or Google billing, often before the user has meaningfully engaged with the app.

Telegram is used as a distribution channel for app subscription traps because its large community groups can be targeted by bots advertising apps with misleading descriptions. A user who downloads the app via a Telegram link may be presented with a subscription prompt within seconds of opening it, sometimes under a pop-up designed to look like a permission request rather than a billing authorisation.
Because the charge goes through the device's app store billing, it appears on a statement from Apple or Google rather than from the fraudulent developer — making it harder to identify and dispute.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram bot or channel post promotes an app — typically described as a productivity tool, VPN, or AI assistant — with a link to the App Store or Google Play. On opening the app, the user is immediately presented with a full-screen subscription offer, often with a free trial toggle that defaults to 'on' and a large 'Continue' button that triggers the subscription.
The subscription price is displayed in small text or briefly before the confirmation screen. Once charged, the app may offer minimal or no genuine functionality, with the operator relying on users failing to cancel before the trial ends or not noticing the recurring charge.
Some Telegram distribution campaigns include fake positive reviews posted across Telegram channels to encourage downloads before the app is flagged by the store.
Common red flags
- Telegram post or bot promoting an app with a link directly to the App Store or Google Play
- App that presents a subscription screen immediately on first open
- Subscription confirmation button styled to look like a standard 'Continue' or permission button
- Trial toggle that defaults to 'on' without clear disclosure
- App with very few genuine reviews or a pattern of reviews posted in a short time window
- Recurring charge on your statement from Apple or Google for an app you do not recognise
How to protect yourself

How to report it
- Report the app to Apple App Store or Google Play using the 'Flag as inappropriate' or 'Report a concern' option
- Request a refund via Apple's Report a Problem or Google Play's refund request tool
- Report the Telegram channel or bot distributing the app using the in-app 'Report' function
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a refund for an app subscription I was tricked into on Telegram?
Go to Apple's reportaproblem.apple.com or Google Play's order history and request a refund citing misleading subscription terms. App stores generally process refunds for recent unintended charges. Also cancel the subscription to prevent further charges.
