Norway has one of the highest rates of crypto ownership in Europe, making its population a prime target for crypto-specific fraud. Norwegian victims encounter fake exchanges, pump-and-dump schemes, and rug-pulls promoted through carefully targeted Norwegian-language social-media campaigns.
Finanstilsynet's authority over crypto service providers increased under EU MiCA-aligned Norwegian rules, and Kripos tracks crypto fraud volumes. Losses in individual cases range from thousands to millions of NOK.
How this scam works on Norway
Scammers promote fake crypto exchanges on Instagram and Telegram using Norwegian influencer accounts — sometimes compromised, sometimes fake — to build credibility. Early investors receive 'returns' funded by later investors in a Ponzi structure.
Other operations create short-lived altcoins with Norwegian-community branding, drive price up artificially, then sell (rug-pull), leaving Norwegian investors holding worthless tokens.
Phishing campaigns targeting Coinbase, Binance, or Norwegian crypto app users steal seed phrases or 2FA codes through convincing Norwegian-language lookalike sites.
