Domain renewal scams have moved onto WhatsApp, where a message warning that a company's domain or web listing is about to expire can prompt a quick, anxious payment. The informal channel removes the official cues that might otherwise prompt verification.
Because the message can reference the real domain name and arrive amid normal business chatter, it can seem credible. The scam relies on the recipient not knowing exactly who their registrar is, or not checking, before paying.
How this scam works on WhatsApp
The business receives a WhatsApp message claiming to be from its registrar or a domain or listing service, warning that the domain is expiring and that immediate renewal is required to avoid losing the website and email.
The sender provides payment details or a link and stresses an imminent deadline. The fee may be inflated or for a service the business does not need, and the conversational pressure discourages verification.
If the business pays, the money funds an unrelated party or an unnecessary service while the genuine domain situation is unchanged. The number can be discarded easily, leaving little route to recovery.
Common red flags
- A WhatsApp message claiming your domain or listing is expiring
- A sender that cannot be confirmed as your actual registrar
- Payment details or a link sent directly in chat
- A fee higher than your normal renewal cost
- An emphasised deadline pressuring immediate payment
- A renewal that is actually for a listing or directory service
How to protect yourself
- Ignore renewal links in chat and log in to your known registrar directly
- Confirm your registrar's identity before paying anything
- Record your renewal dates to recognise false expiry claims
- Compare any fee against your registrar's published pricing
- Treat listing or directory offers as separate from renewal
- Enable auto-renewal and notifications with your genuine registrar
How to report it
- Report the number using WhatsApp's in-app reporting tools
- Report the message to your national consumer protection or fraud body
- Notify your bank or card issuer if a payment was made
Frequently asked questions
I got a WhatsApp saying my domain expires today. How do I check?
Do not use the link or details in the message. Log in directly to the registrar you actually use and check the renewal date there. Confirm the sender matches your real registrar before paying anything.
