Classifieds platforms are frequently used to advertise exotic pets — rare parrots, reptiles, hedgehogs, capybaras, and other animals that are difficult or impossible to find through mainstream pet stores. Scammers exploit the niche demand and buyers' unfamiliarity with the market to list non-existent or illegally sourced animals.
Beyond the financial loss, exotic pet scams carry a secondary risk: buyers may inadvertently participate in the illegal wildlife trade if an actual animal is eventually delivered. The combination of legal ambiguity, high prices, and emotional attachment to the idea of owning an unusual animal makes this a particularly effective fraud.
How this scam works on classifieds
A classifieds listing advertises a healthy baby exotic animal — a macaw, a tortoise, a fennec fox — at a price that seems reasonable for the species. Communication shifts quickly to email or messaging apps. After expressing interest, the buyer is asked for a deposit to hold the animal, followed by shipping fees, import permits, and health certificates — escalating costs that are common in legitimate exotic animal transactions, making them credible.
No animal is ever delivered. The scammer either disappears after the initial deposit, or continues extracting fees citing customs holds or quarantine requirements. In rare cases where an animal is delivered, it may be mislabelled, unhealthy, or legally prohibited to own.
Common red flags
- Listing price seems lower than typical market prices for the species
- Seller requests payment via wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency
- Seller shifts communication to private messaging apps immediately
- No possibility of viewing the animal before paying
- Fees escalate with each step of the supposed shipping process
- Permits and health certificates offered by the seller rather than verified by an independent authority
How to protect yourself
- Research legal ownership requirements for the specific species in your jurisdiction before buying
- Only purchase exotic animals from licensed breeders you can visit in person
- Verify any required permits through official government wildlife authorities
- Never pay for an animal you have not personally inspected
- Consult an exotic-animal veterinarian for guidance on reputable sources
How to report it
- Report the listing to the classifieds platform's fraud team
- Report potential wildlife trafficking to TRAFFIC or your national wildlife authority
- File a fraud report with your national consumer protection body
