Booking platform protection applies only to payments made through the platform's official checkout. When a host moves communication to WhatsApp and requests an additional security deposit, damage waiver, or administrative fee, any money transferred falls entirely outside the platform's protection scheme. This transition from platform to WhatsApp is deliberate and is the core mechanism of this fraud.
WhatsApp's private, personal nature makes these requests feel casual and understandable rather than alarming. A host who says 'the platform deposit doesn't cover all eventualities — I just ask all guests to transfer a small security amount to this number' is mimicking the informal communications that sometimes occur in genuine hosting relationships, making the request seem normal.
How this scam works on WhatsApp
After an official Airbnb or similar booking is made through the platform, the host contacts the guest via WhatsApp — using the number provided through the platform's messaging system. The host explains that an additional security deposit is required, citing a platform policy change, a previous guest damage incident, or a high-season policy. The amount is modest enough not to seem alarming — typically the equivalent of a few hundred pounds or dollars.
Once the off-platform payment is made, the host may then cancel the official booking, leaving the guest without accommodation and having paid both the platform amount (which is refunded through the platform's cancellation policy) and the off-platform deposit, which is not refunded because it was never part of the official transaction.
Common red flags
- Host contacts you via WhatsApp asking for a deposit or fee outside the official platform
- Request framed as a normal additional security or damage deposit not reflected in the original listing price
- Host explains the platform's system cannot accommodate the additional charge
- Request to pay via bank transfer, gift card, or Zelle rather than through the booking platform
- Host asks for the payment before confirming the listing details or check-in instructions
How to protect yourself
- Never pay any amount related to a rental booking outside the official platform checkout
- Refuse all off-platform payment requests, regardless of explanation, and report to the platform
- If a host insists on an off-platform payment, cancel the booking and find an alternative
- Screenshot all WhatsApp communications in case you need to file a report with the platform
- Report the host's account to Airbnb or the relevant platform using their in-app tool
How to report it
- Report to Airbnb's Trust and Safety team with screenshots of the WhatsApp request
- Report to Action Fraud (UK) or the FTC (US) if money was transferred
- Contact your bank immediately if a bank transfer was made
Frequently asked questions
Does Airbnb ever require additional deposits outside the app?
No. All legitimate deposits, damage waivers, and fees for Airbnb bookings are collected through Airbnb's official payment system. Any request to pay outside the app is a violation of Airbnb's policies and a major red flag.
What if the host says the platform deposit is insufficient for their property?
Hosts who wish to charge a higher security deposit must do so through Airbnb's official deposit system, which is reflected in the listing. A host who cannot or will not use this system should not receive off-platform payments from you.
