Fake Airbnb Host Deposit Scam
Fraudsters posing as Airbnb hosts direct guests off the platform to pay a security deposit via bank transfer, then collect the payment and disappear.

What this scam is
Fake Airbnb host deposit scams involve fraudsters who create convincing property listings on Airbnb or approach guests with fabricated offers off-platform. After initial contact, they attempt to move the booking outside of Airbnb's system and request a security deposit — and sometimes the full stay cost — via direct bank transfer, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency.
Once the payment is made, the host becomes uncontactable, the property either does not exist or belongs to someone else, and the guest arrives to find no accommodation waiting. Because the transaction was completed outside Airbnb, the platform's host guarantee and AirCover protection does not apply, leaving victims with no recourse through the platform.
Some scammers use genuine-looking Airbnb listing URLs that are spoofed, or conduct all communication through the Airbnb messaging system before directing guests off-platform at the payment stage.
How it works
The scammer lists a property — often using copied photos from legitimate listings or real estate sites — at a competitive price. Potential guests who inquire receive enthusiastic responses with detailed local knowledge, further reinforcing authenticity.
When booking is initiated, the scammer claims Airbnb is having a technical issue with their account, that the property is temporarily unlisted while awaiting a review, or that they can offer a discount if the guest books directly. They provide a bank account or payment link outside the platform.
Alternatively, the deposit request is framed as a 'refundable security deposit' that Airbnb allegedly does not process, requiring a separate direct payment. Once the deposit or total cost is paid, contact ceases.
Why this scam works
Airbnb's messaging platform is trusted, so when a plausible story about a payment issue is delivered through it, it inherits some of that trust. Security deposits are a genuine part of rental accommodation — the request is not intrinsically unusual. For guests excited about a property or facing a deadline, the urgency to secure the booking reduces scrutiny.

- Offer of a discount in exchange for booking directly
- Property photos appear on multiple sites or do not match the listed location
- Host is unable to provide a video tour or refuses requests to verify the property
- Communication moved to WhatsApp or email before booking is confirmed through Airbnb

Common variations
- Entirely fake listing — property does not exist, guest arrives to wrong or non-existent address
- Genuine listing, stolen identity — scammer has hijacked a real host's account to redirect payments
- Post-booking deposit request — booking confirmed on Airbnb, then separate direct deposit requested
How to verify before you act
Airbnb never requires or recommends payments outside its platform. Security deposits on Airbnb, where applicable, are processed within the app. Any message asking you to pay outside of Airbnb violates platform policy and is almost certainly fraudulent. Navigate directly to the listing URL to confirm it exists and matches what you are discussing. Contact Airbnb support directly if you have any doubt about a payment request.

Frequently asked questions
Does Airbnb ever process security deposits directly?
Airbnb has its own damage protection system (AirCover for Hosts) and may sometimes process security deposits through the app. Any deposit request that asks you to pay outside the Airbnb platform is not an official Airbnb deposit. All legitimate Airbnb payments go through their official checkout.
The listing was real on the site — can Airbnb help me recover my money?
If you paid outside the Airbnb platform, Airbnb's payment protection does not apply. Contact Airbnb to report the host account regardless — they can investigate and prevent other guests from being scammed. Contact your bank about the off-platform transfer. File a fraud report with your national authority.
