Crypto airdrops — free token distributions to existing holders or users — are a real and common practice in the blockchain ecosystem. Scammers exploit this familiarity to fabricate airdrops under established brand names like Kraken, banking on users' desire for free crypto and their trust in the Kraken name to overcome skepticism.
Fake Kraken airdrop scams are particularly effective because Kraken is a large, legitimate exchange with many active users who receive emails and notifications from the platform regularly. A carefully crafted fake airdrop announcement can be very difficult to distinguish from genuine Kraken communications at first glance.
Kraken has never distributed a platform token through an external airdrop claim page. Any Kraken communication about rewards or token distributions that directs users outside of the Kraken platform to claim something by connecting a wallet or depositing funds should be treated with maximum suspicion.
How this scam works on the Kraken brand
An email announces a 'Kraken 10th Anniversary Token Distribution' for all users who have traded on the platform. To claim, users are directed to connect their wallet on a Kraken-branded external site. The site presents a wallet connection flow that submits a drainer transaction on connection.
A social media version runs fake paid advertisements on Twitter/X and Telegram, using Kraken's logo and color scheme. The ads target users interested in cryptocurrency and present a 'KRA token airdrop' with a limited claim window.
Kraken's genuine reward programs are managed within the Kraken platform — visible in the app or at kraken.com. Kraken communicates promotions by email from @kraken.com and through in-app banners. Any reward involving wallet connections to external sites, or requests to send a small amount of crypto to 'verify eligibility,' is a scam.
Common red flags
- A 'Kraken token airdrop' email or social post linking to a non-kraken.com domain
- An airdrop requiring connection of a personal wallet to an external site
- A 'small verification deposit' required before receiving the airdrop
- A countdown timer creating urgency for a limited-window claim
- No corresponding announcement visible on the official kraken.com platform
- Social media accounts with Kraken branding but no official verification badge promoting the airdrop
How to protect yourself
- Check kraken.com's official announcements and in-app notifications for any reward program before participating
- Never connect a primary crypto wallet to an external site based on an email or social media airdrop claim
- Use a dedicated wallet with minimal holdings for any interaction with unfamiliar claim pages

How to report it

- Forward phishing emails to [email protected]
- Report to IC3.gov (US) or Action Fraud (UK)

Frequently asked questions
Has Kraken ever done a genuine token airdrop?
Kraken has offered various promotions and rewards over the years, including trading fee rebates and staking bonuses, but these operate within the Kraken platform. Kraken does not have a native KRA token distributed via external airdrop as of the knowledge cutoff date. Any claim of such a distribution should be verified exclusively at kraken.com.
Why do fake airdrops often mention a specific platform like Kraken?
Naming a well-known, trusted platform adds credibility to the scam. Users who have accounts on Kraken are more likely to believe a Kraken-branded reward is real than a generic 'crypto airdrop' with no brand affiliation.
I connected my wallet to a fake Kraken airdrop site. What now?
Go to Revoke.cash immediately, connect your wallet in read-only mode, and revoke all token approvals granted to the suspicious site. Transfer assets to a new wallet with a new seed phrase if approvals cannot be revoked in time.
