Travellers in urgent need of help — a missed connection, a booking to change, or luggage that did not arrive — often turn to a quick search engine query to find an airline's customer service number. Scammers exploit this by running paid search advertisements and maintaining fake travel-help websites that list fraudulent Delta Air Lines support numbers.
When a panicked traveller calls the fake number, they reach a convincing 'Delta agent' who acknowledges the problem and offers to resolve it — for a fee. Common pretexts include a 'rebooking service fee', a 'priority processing charge', or 'seat-upgrade credits' that must be purchased before the agent can complete the change. These fees are entirely fictitious; Delta does not charge them.
The fake agent may also use the call to gather the traveller's ticket number, credit card details, and Medallion or SkyMiles credentials, which are then used for further fraud or sold.
How this scam works on the Delta Air Lines brand
Delta's real customer service number for US passengers is 1-800-221-1212, and all booking-management tools are available at delta.com or through the Fly Delta app. Fake Delta support sites typically display a prominent toll-free number and claim to offer 'faster service than waiting on hold with Delta'.
The fraudulent agent follows a script: they verify the booking reference (which gives them the reservation details), describe a technical issue that only they can fix, and request a fee by credit card or gift card. Some agents go further and ask the traveller to stay on the line while they 'verify' the payment, observing the bank app on the traveller's screen through a screen-sharing application.
After the call, the traveller often discovers that no change was actually made to their booking and that the fee charged has no corresponding Delta transaction in their account.
Common red flags
- The Delta support number was found in a search engine advertisement rather than directly on delta.com
- The 'Delta agent' charges a fee for a booking change or rebooking service — Delta has published service fees that do not require payment to a third party by gift card
- The agent asks you to share your screen or download a support tool during the call
- The phone number is not 1-800-221-1212 or another number listed on the official delta.com Contact Us page
- After the call, your booking has not actually changed despite the agent's assurances
How to protect yourself
- Find Delta's real customer service number exclusively at delta.com/contactus — the main US number is 1-800-221-1212
- Use the Fly Delta app or delta.com to make routine booking changes, which avoids the need to call support at all
- Never pay a fee to a third party by gift card for an airline booking change — these are always fraudulent
- Verify any booking changes made during a support call by checking your itinerary in the Fly Delta app immediately after the call
How to report it
- Report fake Delta support sites to Google and Bing via their ad-reporting tools
- Report to Delta via [email protected]
- File a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
- If you were charged fraudulently, contact your card issuer to dispute the charge
Frequently asked questions
What is Delta's real customer service phone number?
Delta's main US customer service number is 1-800-221-1212. For international numbers, check delta.com/contactus. Only use numbers found directly on delta.com — not from search engine ads.
An agent charged me a fee for a rebooking. Was that legitimate?
It depends on where the number came from. Genuine Delta change fees are charged to your card on file through Delta's system and appear in your booking record. If the 'fee' was paid to a third party via gift card or a personal payment app, it was fraudulent.
