Belize is a premier eco-tourism and scuba-diving destination in Central America, drawing visitors to its barrier reef, rainforest lodges, and Mayan sites. The high value of Belizean tourism experiences — particularly dive liveaboards and jungle lodges — makes it an attractive subject for fake booking fraud.
Scammers create convincing replicas of real Belizean lodge and tour-operator websites, collect deposits, and leave visitors without accommodation or pre-booked experiences on arrival.
How this scam works on Belize
Fake Belize booking sites appear in search results and on social media, using stolen photography of real eco-lodges on Ambergris Caye, Placencia, and Cayo. They offer slightly below-market rates and require a non-refundable deposit via bank transfer to hold the booking.
Dive operator impersonation is particularly common, as Belize barrier reef experiences are bucket-list items and victims are willing to pay significant advance amounts for the experience.
Airbnb-style vacation rental scams operate through Facebook Marketplace, with fake 'owners' of Belizean beach cabanas or jungle cabins collecting deposits for properties they have no right to rent.
Common red flags
- Price noticeably below comparable listings on established platforms
- Deposit requested via bank transfer rather than platform-protected payment
- Property or operator photographs appear on other websites when reverse-image-searched
- Agent is unwilling to arrange a live video walkthrough of the property
- Booking confirmation comes from a free email domain
- Website was created very recently
How to protect yourself
- Book only through established platforms with buyer protection or directly via the operator's verified official website
- Verify tour operators and lodges through the Belize Tourism Board's official directory
- Reverse-image-search all property photographs before paying
- Pay by credit card to enable chargeback if no service is provided
- Call the lodge or operator on a number found independently — not from the booking agent
How to report it
- Report to the Belize Tourism Board if a licensed operator is impersonated
- File a complaint with the Belize Police Department
- Report fake listings to the platform on which they appeared
