Fake Booking Site Scams in Dubai & UAE
Fraudulent hotel and holiday booking platforms targeting tourists visiting Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, and Abu Dhabi.

Dubai is one of the world's most visited cities, and counterfeit booking platforms have emerged to exploit the enormous volume of hotel and experience reservations made each year. These sites mimic well-known booking portals, advertise luxury hotels at steep discounts, and collect full payment before the victim realises no reservation was ever made.
Tourists often discover the fraud on arrival at their accommodation, leaving them stranded without a room in an expensive city. The scam is most active during peak seasons such as Dubai Shopping Festival, Expo periods, and the winter travel rush from Europe.
How this scam works on Dubai & UAE
Fake sites are promoted through Google search ads or social media sponsored posts, appearing above legitimate results for searches like 'cheap hotels Dubai marina'. The design closely copies real platforms, including reviews, star ratings, and a seemingly functional booking flow.
Some fraudsters pose as agents on messaging apps, offering 'discounted block bookings' that disappeared from official sites. Payment is requested by bank transfer or crypto to 'avoid credit card surcharges' — a tactic that removes any chargeback protection.
In the UAE, scammers sometimes use the names of real licensed tour operators, making it difficult for victims to distinguish fraud from a genuine overbooked hotel.
Common red flags
- Price is 40 percent or more below comparable hotels on major platforms
- Site URL does not match the known domain of a recognised booking platform
- Payment requested by bank transfer or cryptocurrency rather than credit card
- Confirmation email comes from a generic Gmail or Yahoo address
- Hotel cannot confirm the reservation when called directly
- No physical address or UAE trade licence number on the site
How to protect yourself
- Always book through platforms with recognisable domains and verifiable UAE trade licences
- Call the hotel directly to confirm your booking after payment
- Pay by credit card to retain chargeback rights — never by wire transfer for travel bookings
- Check the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) register for licensed tour operators
- Search the site domain on WHOIS to check registration age and owner details
- If a deal seems implausibly cheap, book directly with the hotel instead

Frequently asked questions
Can I get my money back if I booked a fake hotel in Dubai?
If you paid by credit card, initiate a chargeback with your bank immediately. If you paid by bank transfer, contact Dubai Police and your home bank urgently — there is a narrow window to recall international transfers. The DET consumer protection team can also assist with licensed operator disputes.
