Mexico's tourism industry — one of the world's largest — attracts fraudulent booking sites that target both foreign visitors and domestic travelers. These sites list fake vacation rentals in Cancún, Los Cabos, and Playa del Carmen, or offer counterfeit tours and transport packages at attractive prices.
With the massive growth of short-term rental and independent travel culture, fraudsters exploit the willingness of travelers to book outside traditional hotel chains, creating convincing listings on cloned platforms or entirely fictitious booking sites.
How this scam works on Mexico
A traveler searching for accommodation in a popular Mexican destination encounters an attractive listing on a site mimicking Booking.com, Airbnb, or Vrbo, or on an entirely fake platform with convincing design. The property looks real based on photos (often stolen from legitimate listings or real estate sites). Payment is requested via bank transfer, Zelle, or crypto — methods with no buyer protection.
On arrival, the address does not exist, is occupied by real tenants who know nothing about the booking, or the property is not as described. Similar schemes operate for Cenote tours, whale shark excursions, and airport transfers — particularly targeting visitors who book last-minute through links in travel forums or social media groups.
Some fraudsters operate within legitimate platforms by creating listings, collecting advance payments, and then canceling or failing to appear.
Common red flags
- Listing price is substantially below comparable legitimate options in the same destination
- Owner insists on payment via bank transfer, Zelle, or crypto rather than through the platform
- Listing has very few reviews or reviews that seem generic and templated
- Owner urges you to communicate and pay outside the booking platform
- Reverse image search on property photos reveals them on other sites under different names
- No verifiable address or property details that can be confirmed on Google Street View
How to protect yourself
- Book through well-established platforms with robust buyer protection (Airbnb, Booking.com, Hotels.com)
- Pay only through the official platform payment system — never by external bank transfer
- Verify the property address exists on Google Maps and Street View before paying
- Check reviews carefully for authenticity and read negative reviews thoroughly
- For tours and excursions, book through operators registered with SECTUR (Secretaría de Turismo)
