Venmo's social, casual design — built around quick payments between friends — makes it an easy fit for scammers pretending to be a delivery driver, since asking a customer to 'just Venmo the extra tip' fits naturally into how the app is already used for small everyday payments.
How this scam works on Venmo
After a real or fabricated delivery, a message claiming to be from the driver provides a Venmo username and asks the customer to send a small additional tip directly, framing it as a personal favor rather than an official transaction. Because Venmo payments to a stranger carry essentially no buyer protection and are usually irreversible once sent, the money is gone as soon as it's transferred, regardless of whether a real delivery or driver was ever involved. Some versions of the scam target Venmo's public activity feed, where a scammer notices a customer publicly commenting or tagging a delivery-related payment and reaches out with a follow-up request referencing that visible transaction to appear legitimate. Because Venmo doesn't verify that a receiving username actually belongs to a platform-affiliated driver, there is no way to confirm the recipient's identity before sending.
Common red flags
- Request to send a follow-up tip via Venmo outside the delivery app's official system
- Message references a Venmo payment or public activity visible in your feed to appear more credible
- Venmo username provided doesn't match any driver name shown in your app's order history
- Framing the request as a personal favor rather than an official platform transaction
- Urgency to send the payment quickly after the delivery is completed
How to protect yourself
- Set your Venmo activity to private so past payments can't be used to craft a convincing follow-up scam
- Only tip delivery drivers through the delivery app's own tipping feature
- Treat any request to Venmo a stranger for a delivery-related payment as a red flag
- Verify the request with the delivery platform's customer support before sending anything
- Avoid sending Venmo payments to usernames you cannot independently verify
How to report it
- Report the receiving Venmo account to Venmo's fraud and safety team
- Report the message to the delivery platform being referenced
- File a complaint with the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov describing the fake tip request
- Dispute the payment with Venmo support, though recovery is not guaranteed for person-to-person transfers
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a Venmo payment back if it turns out to be a delivery tip scam?
It's unlikely, since Venmo payments to individuals are designed to be quick and final with limited buyer protection, which is exactly why scammers prefer this method for follow-up tip requests.
Why is my Venmo activity feed relevant to this scam?
A public Venmo activity feed can reveal that you recently made a delivery-related payment, giving a scammer just enough real detail to craft a convincing follow-up tip request — setting your feed to private removes that opening.
