Fake delivery texts are among the most common scams reaching Finnish phones, riding on the high volume of online shopping and the familiarity of Posti and international couriers. A short message claims a parcel cannot be delivered until a small customs charge, redelivery fee, or address confirmation is completed.
The sums are deliberately tiny — often a euro or two — to lower resistance. The real prize is the victim's card details, which are then used for large or recurring charges, or sold on. The messages are timed to seasons of heavy parcel traffic such as the pre-Christmas period.
How this scam works on Finland
The victim receives an SMS or message claiming to be from Posti, DHL, or another courier, stating that a delivery is on hold pending a fee or that the address could not be confirmed. A link leads to a page styled with the courier's logo and Finnish-language text requesting card details to release the parcel.
When the victim enters their card number, expiry, and CVC, the criminals either charge the card immediately or enrol it in a recurring 'subscription' that drains small amounts over months. Some pages also request a bank login under the pretext of identity verification.
In Finland the scam frequently spoofs Posti tracking-code formats and uses sender IDs that closely resemble genuine courier shortcodes, making the messages look authentic on the lock screen.
Common red flags
- A text about a parcel you are not expecting, or that you did not order
- A small 'customs' or 'redelivery' fee demanded via a link before release
- A link to a payment page that requests full card details for a tiny charge
- Sender ID or shortened URL that does not match official Posti or courier domains
- Urgent language warning the parcel will be returned if you do not act today
- A request for bank login credentials under the guise of identity verification
- Grammar or formatting that subtly differs from genuine courier notifications
How to protect yourself
- Track parcels only through the official Posti or courier app, not through links in texts
- Remember genuine customs charges in Finland are handled through official Posti processes, not random SMS links
- Never enter card details on a page opened from an unsolicited delivery text
- Check the real status of any delivery using the tracking code on the seller's order confirmation
- Use virtual or single-use card numbers for online purchases where your bank offers them
- Report and delete suspicious texts instead of tapping the link to 'see what it is'
How to report it
- Report smishing texts to your mobile operator and to the Finnish authorities via poliisi.fi
- Contact your bank immediately if you entered card details, to block the card and dispute charges
- Forward examples to Posti's fraud-awareness channel so warnings can be issued
Frequently asked questions
Does Posti send links asking me to pay a fee by card?
Genuine customs or handling charges are managed through official Posti channels and your verified account, not through unexpected SMS links demanding card details. If you receive such a text, do not tap it — check any real parcel through the official Posti app or website.
