Fake event ticket scams via Venmo are common around high-demand concerts, sports finals, and festivals where tickets sell out quickly and desperate buyers turn to social media. Sellers in these channels require Venmo payment to avoid the buyer protections built into legitimate resale platforms.
Once the Venmo transfer is complete, the seller either disappears, sends fake PDF tickets, or sends real tickets that have already been used or transferred to someone else. The buyer arrives at the venue and is turned away.
How this scam works on Venmo
A seller posts in a Facebook group, Reddit thread, or Twitter/X reply claiming to have spare tickets for a sold-out event. They require Venmo payment 'to hold the tickets' and resist using any resale platform. After the Venmo transfer, the seller sends a screenshot of a ticket that may look authentic.
At the event, the ticket QR code is already used or flagged as invalid. By then the seller has blocked the buyer on all platforms. Venmo offers no buyer protection for personal transactions, leaving the victim without recourse through the app.
Some operations target multiple buyers simultaneously with the same ticket, collecting Venmo payments from many people for a single entry.
Common red flags
- A seller insists on Venmo rather than a verified resale platform for event tickets
- The price is well below face value for a high-demand event
- The seller is in a hurry and applies urgency — 'someone else is already asking'
- The Venmo account was created recently
- The ticket PDF or screenshot cannot be verified through the venue or box office
- The seller becomes uncontactable after the Venmo payment
How to protect yourself
- Buy event tickets only through verified resale platforms with buyer guarantees
- Never pay via personal Venmo for a ticket from an unknown social media seller
- Verify ticket validity through the venue or official app before attending
- Report the fraudulent Venmo account through in-app support
- Report the seller to the platform where they advertised
- File a police report if the ticket cost was significant
How to report it
- Report the Venmo account through in-app fraud reporting
- Report the fraudulent listing to the social platform or group where it appeared
- File a consumer fraud report with your national consumer protection authority
Frequently asked questions
How can I verify a ticket is real before paying via Venmo?
Ask the seller to show you the ticket in the official ticketing app with their account visible. Request the booking reference and verify it with the venue or ticketing platform before sending any payment. A genuine seller will not object to verification; a scammer will apply pressure to pay immediately.
