Romance scams are present across Uzbekistan's social media landscape, particularly on Instagram and Telegram where cross-border connections are common. Scammers pose as successful professionals abroad — often Uzbeks living in Russia, Europe, or the Gulf — making the initial approach feel culturally natural.
Victims are emotionally invested before any financial request appears, and the shame of having been deceived through a romantic relationship means many cases go unreported.
How this scam works on Uzbekistan
Uzbek victims are typically approached by apparent compatriots living abroad, who build friendships that gradually become romantic. The scammer invests time in understanding family structure, aspirations, and cultural values, then crafts crisis narratives that feel personally relevant.
Common crisis scenarios include a failed business deal that has left the scammer temporarily stranded, a medical emergency for a family member, or a problem with a remittance that requires a bridging payment. The victim is told the amount will be returned as soon as the scammer's situation resolves.
Some Uzbek-targeted scams use the emotional resonance of labour migration: a scammer posing as an Uzbek worker abroad claims to have been cheated by an employer and needs a small sum to return home or resolve a work dispute.

Frequently asked questions
Are Uzbek labour migrants specifically targeted by romance scammers?
Workers abroad and their families back home are both targeted. Families may receive appeals purportedly from a worker in distress; workers abroad may be targeted by fake romantic partners who engineer financial crises.
