WeChat is extensively used for professional networking and job searching in many communities, making it a natural surface for fake recruiter operations. Scammers impersonate staffing agencies or corporate HR departments with convincing WeChat profiles and group memberships.
Victims range from recent graduates seeking their first role to experienced professionals lured with executive-level salaries, all tricked into paying fees or surrendering documents that enable identity fraud.
How this scam works on WeChat
A fake recruiter adds a target on WeChat, referencing a specific job posting the person applied for or presenting a role that matches the target's stated experience. The interaction is professional and detailed, requesting a CV and then conducting a scripted 'interview' via WeChat video or voice call.
After 'selection', the victim is asked to pay for a background check, visa processing, work permit, or training materials before starting. These fees escalate as more steps are added to the hiring process, with no job ever materialising.
Alternatively, victims are 'hired' for a task-scam operation and asked to deposit a 'starting capital' to begin earning, which is never returned.
