Facebook's review system for business Pages is a trusted consumer resource — and therefore a priority target for manipulation. Fake reviews are used to inflate the apparent quality of businesses, products, and services, steering consumers toward purchases they would not make with accurate information.
Beyond business Page reviews, Facebook's Groups and Marketplace are also used to seed fake testimonials for products and services, creating false social proof among community members.
How this scam works on Facebook
Business Pages accumulate artificially positive reviews through incentivised customer review campaigns, purchased review services, or coordinated posting by associated accounts. Negative reviews are reported and disputed to have them removed.
In Groups, accounts post positive product testimonials that are not genuine customer experiences but paid or incentivised posts. In Marketplace, seller feedback may be manipulated through self-trading between associated accounts to inflate trust scores.
Some scam operations target specific categories — home improvement services, online courses, financial coaching — where positive reviews are particularly effective at driving purchases of high-value services.
Common red flags
- Business Page has a high rating but reviews are short, generic, and lack specific details
- All five-star reviews were posted within a short time window
- Group posts praising a product or service appear across multiple groups simultaneously
- Reviewer profiles were created recently and have reviewed only this business
- Negative reviews are absent or have been removed despite the service being widely available
- Product or service cannot be independently verified through any non-Facebook source
How to protect yourself
- Research businesses on review platforms outside Facebook before spending money
- Look for review patterns — uniform short positive reviews without negative balance are suspicious
- Search for the business name plus 'review' or 'complaint' on a search engine
- Report fake reviews on Facebook Pages using the review reporting function
- Ask for verifiable references or credentials before paying for high-value services
How to report it
- Report fake reviews on Facebook Pages using the flag icon on individual reviews
- Report Facebook Groups running fake testimonial campaigns using the group report function
- File a complaint with your national consumer protection authority about misleading advertising
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if Facebook reviews for a business are genuine?
Look for variety in review content — genuine customers describe specific experiences. Check reviewer profiles for age and activity patterns. A sudden spike of five-star reviews, especially from new accounts with no other activity, is a strong signal of manipulation.
