Fake Review Scams on TikTok
Fraudulent TikTok creators produce paid or incentivised product reviews that misrepresent goods, manipulating buying decisions for financial gain.

Last reviewed: 1 June 2026
TikTok's influencer economy relies heavily on product reviews and recommendations. This creates a major fraud vector: creators who accept payment to produce glowing reviews of products they have not genuinely used, or who fabricate the effectiveness of goods to earn affiliate commissions.
For viewers, a TikTok review feels personal and authentic in a way that a banner advertisement does not, making the deception particularly effective at influencing purchasing decisions.
How this scam works on TikTok
A TikTok creator — sometimes an account built specifically for this purpose — posts an enthusiastic product review. The review may include fabricated demonstrations, edited before-and-after footage, or scripted talking points provided by a seller.
The creator earns a commission on every sale driven through their affiliate link or promo code. Buyers who purchase based on the review find the product does not match the claims made. In more extreme cases, the review is for a product from a fraudulent store, meaning no delivery occurs at all.
Coordinated fake review campaigns across multiple accounts are sometimes used to create an impression of widespread satisfaction with a fraudulent product.
Common red flags
- Multiple different TikTok accounts posting identical or very similar reviews in a short window
- Review claims dramatic results with no caveat or comparison to baseline
- Creator account posts only product reviews with no other personal content
- Affiliate link or discount code is the primary call to action in every video
- Comment questions about authenticity are deleted or receive evasive responses
- The product cannot be found in any established retail channel
How to protect yourself
- Search for independent reviews on platforms unrelated to TikTok before purchasing
- Be aware that TikTok affiliate revenue creates a financial incentive to overstate product quality
- Check whether the creator discloses paid partnerships as required by advertising standards
- Read the comment section carefully, particularly any comments questioning results
- Test return and refund policies before purchasing by checking independent consumer forums
How to report it
- Report misleading or undisclosed paid reviews to TikTok through the video report function
- Submit a complaint to your national advertising standards authority
- Report to your consumer protection body if a purchase based on false claims resulted in financial loss
Frequently asked questions
Are TikTok creators required to disclose paid product reviews?
In most countries, advertising standards regulations require creators to clearly disclose paid partnerships or gifted products. Failure to do so may be a violation of consumer protection law. Look for hashtags such as #ad or #sponsored — their absence is a warning sign.
