Fake Online Stores in Argentina
How fraudulent e-commerce sites targeting Argentine shoppers collect payment for goods that are never delivered.

Fake online stores are a significant consumer fraud in Argentina, where e-commerce growth has been rapid and platforms like Mercado Libre sit alongside a large number of smaller independent shops. Scam stores proliferate around promotional events — Hot Sale, Cyber Monday Argentina, end-of-year sales — offering dramatic discounts on electronics, sportswear, and household goods before accepting payment and disappearing.
Scam stores are promoted heavily through Instagram and Facebook ads, often using stolen product images and brand assets from legitimate Argentine retailers to appear genuine.
How this scam works on Argentina
Fraudulent Argentine stores create professional-looking websites in Spanish with peso pricing and simulated customer reviews. Promotions are timed to coincide with legitimate shopping events to blend in with real deals. Payment is accepted via Mercado Pago, bank transfer, or credit card.
After payment, victims receive automated confirmation emails. Tracking numbers provided lead nowhere. Customer service responses gradually cease. By the time the victim realises the store is fake, the payment window for dispute resolution may have passed.
Some stores also operate as data-harvest operations — collecting credit card or CBU (banking) details through fake payment pages that transmit data to attackers rather than processing a transaction.
Common red flags
- Price significantly below all other retailers for the same product
- Website and social media presence were created very recently
- Payment page redirects to an unfamiliar domain not associated with the store or a major processor
- No physical address or CUIT (tax ID) visible on the website
- Contact available only via WhatsApp — no email or phone on official social media
How to protect yourself
- Prefer Mercado Libre or other established platforms with buyer protection for unfamiliar purchases
- Verify the store's CUIT on AFIP's public register before purchasing
- Pay by credit card where possible — Defensa del Consumidor can assist with non-delivery disputes
- Search the store name alongside 'estafa' before buying
How to report it
- File a complaint with Defensa del Consumidor at argentina.gob.ar
- Report to the UFIN or local cybercrime unit with the store URL and payment evidence
- Contact your bank to dispute the charge and report the counterparty account
