E-commerce has grown substantially in Bahrain, accelerated by pandemic-era behaviour changes. Instagram shops, Facebook Marketplace, and cloned websites now offer a broad range of goods — electronics, fashion, and homeware — at prices engineered to attract bargain hunters. Fraudulent operators use this channel to collect payment and then disappear without shipping anything.
Victims who pay via bank transfer or crypto have very limited recourse, while those who used credit cards may be able to initiate chargebacks.
How this scam works on Bahrain
A social media advertisement for discounted electronics or luxury goods drives traffic to a polished website or Instagram shop. Prices are 20–50% below retail. The checkout process accepts credit cards, bank transfers, or sometimes crypto. After payment, a confirmation email or message arrives, followed by a tracking number that resolves to a generic logistics page.
Delivery is delayed repeatedly and eventually the shop becomes inaccessible. Some fake stores send an item of far lower value than advertised — a cheap substitute — to prevent immediate fraud reports.
In Bahrain, some scam operations specifically target items popular among the large expat community: regional electronics, sportswear, and niche imported food products.
Common red flags
- Prices dramatically below established retail outlets for the same product
- Website has no verifiable Bahrain address or Commercial Registration number
- Payment requested via bank transfer to a personal account or crypto
- No traceable customer service phone number — only Instagram or WhatsApp
- Domain registered recently with no customer reviews outside the shop's own page
- Products are shipped only after full prepayment with no cash-on-delivery option
How to protect yourself
- Use credit cards or platforms with buyer protection for online purchases
- Verify the shop's Commercial Registration on the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism website
- Search the shop name with 'scam Bahrain' before purchasing
- Prefer well-established regional e-commerce platforms with dispute resolution
- If a deal seems unusually cheap, verify the price on at least two other verified retailers
How to report it
- Report to the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism if a business registration is falsely claimed
- File a complaint with the Bahrain Police Cybercrime Unit
- Contact your card issuer for a chargeback if you paid by credit card
Frequently asked questions
I paid by bank transfer and the goods did not arrive. Can I recover the money?
Bank transfers are difficult to reverse. Report to your bank and to the Bahrain Police as quickly as possible. If the recipient account is identified, police can request a freeze. Always prefer credit card or payment platforms with buyer protection for online shopping.
