Online shopping fraud in Peru has grown in parallel with the adoption of Yape and Plin — Peru's widely used mobile payment apps. Fraudulent stores operating on Facebook Marketplace, Instagram, and OLX Peru accept payment via these instant transfer apps, which offer no chargeback mechanism, then fail to deliver goods.
Victims typically purchase electronics, clothing, shoes, or baby products from what appear to be active, well-reviewed Peruvian seller accounts. The social proof — including fake reviews and follower counts — is sufficient to overcome initial scepticism.
How this scam works on Peru
Fake sellers on Facebook Marketplace or OLX post listings for in-demand products at 10–30% below retail prices. When a buyer contacts them, communication moves to WhatsApp, where the seller uses urgency cues ('last unit,' 'selling today') to rush the transaction. Yape or Plin transfer is requested to a personal number.
After payment, the seller initially provides a fake tracking number and then becomes unresponsive or blocks the buyer. In some cases, the delivery address given is real but the parcel never arrives because the order was never placed. Other variants deliver a clearly inferior or completely different product.
Facebook Marketplace fraud is further enabled by the practice of borrowing or purchasing compromised Peruvian Facebook accounts with years of activity to create a false sense of trustworthiness.
Common red flags
- Price is significantly lower than the same product on Linio, Falabella, or Mercado Libre
- Seller asks to communicate via WhatsApp and requests Yape or Plin payment
- Seller refuses to use Mercado Libre's protected payment system
- Tracking number provided after payment is invalid or copied from another shipment
- Seller profile was created recently or has purchased fake reviews
- Urgency pressure: 'tengo otro comprador esperando' ('I have another buyer waiting')
How to protect yourself
- Use Mercado Libre's built-in payment protection for all marketplace purchases
- Avoid Yape or Plin transfers to unknown sellers — there is no chargeback
- Request a video call showing the actual product before transferring funds
- Search the seller's name or phone number plus 'estafa' on Google before purchasing
- Prefer sellers with INDECOPI-registered businesses or verifiable commercial addresses
- For high-value purchases, meet in person at a secure public location
How to report it
- File a complaint with INDECOPI at indecopi.gob.pe for consumer protection violations
- Report to the PNP DIDAT at divindat.pnp.gob.pe for online fraud
- Report the Facebook or OLX listing to the platform to prevent further victims
Frequently asked questions
Does Yape offer buyer protection?
No. Yape is a real-time bank transfer app without a buyer-protection or chargeback mechanism. Once a transfer is sent, reversal requires the recipient's voluntary cooperation or a court order. Never use Yape for purchases from unknown sellers.
