Fake online stores sometimes use job boards to recruit customer-service agents, order managers, or warehouse staff, presenting themselves as genuine e-commerce businesses. Once hired, employees discover the operation is fraudulent — selling goods that do not exist or are counterfeit — often after customers begin demanding refunds or chargebacks.
Workers may face legal consequences for participating in fraud they were unaware of, and their personal details, submitted during onboarding, may be used for identity theft. Some operations also ask staff to process customer payments through their personal bank accounts, making the employee appear to be the fraudster when transactions are disputed.
How this scam works on Job Boards
A job listing for a remote customer-service or admin role comes with an attractive salary and immediate start. After a brief interview, the worker is onboarded quickly and asked to handle customer queries about delayed or missing orders. The worker soon realises orders are never fulfilled. Some operations collapse quickly and disappear; others run for months before enough chargebacks trigger a platform shutdown.
In the payment-processing variant, workers are asked to receive customer payments and forward them to the 'company', taking a commission — making them unknowing money mules.
Common red flags
- E-commerce company with no verifiable trading history or customer reviews
- Onboarding asks for personal bank account details to receive company payments
- Customer complaints about non-delivery begin arriving very quickly after starting
- Company website was registered very recently and has thin or AI-generated content
- Payment instructions ask workers to forward received funds minus a commission
How to protect yourself
- Research any e-commerce employer thoroughly, including customer reviews and company registration
- Never agree to receive payments in a personal account on behalf of an employer
- If customers complain of non-delivery on your first days, escalate internally and consider leaving
- Seek legal advice if you believe you have been used as part of a fraud
How to report it
- Report to your national trading standards or consumer protection authority
- Report the job listing to the job board
- Contact your bank to explain the situation if personal accounts were used
Frequently asked questions
Can I face legal trouble for working for a fake store without knowing it was fake?
Your legal exposure depends on your actions and what you could reasonably have known. If you were processing payments through a personal account, the risk is higher. Seek independent legal advice quickly and cooperate fully with any investigation.
