Telegram fake stores have become increasingly common as the platform's bot and channel features make it easy to simulate a fully functional shop without building a website. A channel can display product images, prices, and a contact number, while a bot automates the 'ordering' process and collects payment details.
Because Telegram channels can attract hundreds of thousands of subscribers and are indexed in-app, a fake store can present the appearance of an established business purely through subscriber count and posting volume.
How this scam works on Telegram
A Telegram channel advertises branded goods — often electronics, clothing, or supplements — at heavily discounted prices. An ordering bot guides the buyer through selecting a product and entering payment details. Payment is requested via bank transfer, cryptocurrency, or a payment link outside the platform. Once sufficient orders are collected, the channel goes silent and the operator disappears.
Some fake Telegram stores run for extended periods, fulfilling a small number of low-value orders to generate positive reviews before scaling up the fraud. Others operate entirely as aggregators, forwarding orders to a third-party site that collects payment and disappears without dispatching goods.
Reviews within the channel are easily fabricated using the channel admin's ability to post and pin comments from multiple accounts.
Common red flags
- Telegram store channel offering branded goods at significantly below-market prices
- Payment requested via bank transfer, cryptocurrency, or an external link rather than an established payment platform
- No independently verifiable business address, company registration, or returns policy
- Reviews posted within the channel that cannot be corroborated on external review sites
- Ordering bot that collects card details or directs to an unfamiliar external payment page
- Channel that becomes unresponsive after a period of active trading
How to protect yourself
- Only purchase from stores with independently verifiable contact details, company registration, and external reviews
- Never pay for goods via bank transfer or cryptocurrency — use protected payment methods
- Search the store name on external review platforms before purchasing
- Report Telegram shop channels selling suspicious goods or accepting insecure payment methods
- Use a credit card for online purchases wherever possible to benefit from chargeback protection
How to report it
- Report the Telegram channel using the in-app 'Report' function and select 'Fake account/channel'
- Report to your national consumer protection or trading standards authority
- Contact your bank for a chargeback if payment was made by card
Frequently asked questions
Are all Telegram store channels fraudulent?
Not all — some legitimate businesses use Telegram to promote their products. The key distinction is that legitimate stores will have independently verifiable contact details, accept payment through established protected platforms, and have reviews on external sites. Stores that only accept bank transfer or cryptocurrency and have no verifiable external presence carry a high fraud risk.
