Viber's VoIP calling feature enables fraudsters to make calls that appear to originate from local numbers or even recognisable caller IDs in some configurations. This is exploited by support impersonation scammers who claim to be from the victim's bank, telecom provider, or a government agency.
The combination of a voice call — which feels more urgent and authoritative — with follow-up Viber messages containing links creates a multi-step attack that is more persuasive than either channel alone.
How this scam works on Viber
A Viber call arrives claiming to be from the victim's bank's fraud department, alerting them to suspicious activity on their account. The caller requests OTP codes 'to secure the account' or asks the victim to transfer funds to a 'safe account' while the fraud is investigated.
Following the call, a Viber message arrives containing a link to a remote-access tool or a fake bank verification portal, described as necessary to complete the security process. Victims who comply give attackers direct access to their devices or accounts.
Some variants target crypto users by impersonating exchange support teams, requesting seed phrases or private keys to 'verify wallet ownership' during an alleged account review.

Frequently asked questions
How can I verify a support call is genuine without hanging up?
Ask the caller for a case reference number, then independently look up the official contact number for the organisation and call back to verify. A genuine support agent will have no issue with this.
