In many popular travel destinations, WhatsApp has become the primary booking channel for local tour guides, drivers, and experience operators. This normalisation of WhatsApp booking creates an opening for scammers who present themselves as experienced local guides and collect payments before the tour day.
The informal, personal nature of WhatsApp communication builds apparent rapport quickly. Victims who would scrutinise a tour booking website more carefully may pay a WhatsApp guide without completing the same verification steps.
How this scam works on WhatsApp
A traveller receives a WhatsApp message from a 'local guide' — often after sharing their travel plans in a public group or having their number shared without consent. The guide offers personalised tour rates at below-guidebook prices and builds rapport over multiple messages.
A deposit is requested to confirm the booking, with the balance due on the day. The deposit is paid; on the day, the guide either does not appear, arrives significantly late and blames traffic, or delivers a cut-price version of the promised experience with diversions to commission-paying shops.
Full cancellations are common on days the guide books multiple groups simultaneously and prioritises the highest-paying booking, leaving others stranded with no refund of the pre-paid deposit.
Common red flags
- Guide makes first contact via unsolicited WhatsApp message
- No verifiable licence number from the destination's tourism authority
- Deposit requested before the tour with no written booking confirmation or cancellation terms
- Guide cannot provide contactable references from previous clients
- Tour itinerary is vague or changes after deposit is paid
- Guide is unwilling to provide a formal receipt for any payment
How to protect yourself
- Book through your hotel concierge or established tour booking platforms rather than through unsolicited WhatsApp contacts
- Verify guide licensing with the destination's official tourism authority before paying
- Minimise any pre-payment and pay the majority of the tour fee on completion
- Request a written itinerary with specific locations and timings before parting with any deposit
- Keep records of all WhatsApp communications for use in any dispute
- Check independent review platforms for the guide's name or number before booking
How to report it
- Report the WhatsApp contact via 'Report Contact' if the guide fails to deliver or disappears
- File a complaint with the destination country's tourism authority
- Leave an honest review on travel platforms to warn other visitors
Frequently asked questions
Is it ever acceptable for a legitimate guide to request a deposit via WhatsApp?
Legitimate guides sometimes request deposits, but they should always provide a formal booking confirmation with their licence number, a clear refund policy, and a payment receipt. No written confirmation means no deposit.
