Telegram travel groups for specific destinations have grown into active communities where travellers exchange recommendations and book local experiences. Scam guides embed themselves in these groups, appearing as knowledgeable locals before proposing customised tours and collecting pre-payments.
The community setting provides false social proof — other group members who have not dealt with the guide may vouch positively or simply not flag concerns, leaving new members to discover the fraud independently.
How this scam works on Telegram
A scammer joins a destination Telegram travel group and participates helpfully in discussions, establishing apparent local expertise. When a traveller posts asking for guide recommendations, the scammer responds or messages them privately with a personalised offer.
After agreeing on an itinerary and price via Telegram chat, the scammer requests a deposit by bank transfer or crypto to confirm the booking. On the tour day, the guide either fails to appear, delivers a shortened and inferior version, or redirects the tour to shops and restaurants paying the guide commission.
Cancellations with refund promises are a common tactic for extracting deposits without delivering any service — the promise is made sincerely but the refund never arrives.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell a genuine local guide from a scammer on Telegram?
Genuine guides can provide their official tourism licence number for you to verify directly with the local authority, have a demonstrable presence on established review platforms, and do not pressure you into paying a large deposit before you have met.
