When a player suggests moving an in-game item trade discussion to WhatsApp, they are often seeking to step outside the game's built-in anti-fraud mechanisms. This move is a significant warning sign — legitimate traders have no reason to leave a platform's protected trading environment for an unprotected messaging app.
Once on WhatsApp, the scammer operates with full anonymity and without any platform safety net. Victims who comply with trade requests lose items with no avenue for dispute.
How this scam works on WhatsApp
A scammer engages a player in a game chat or Discord server, proposes a trade, and then suggests moving to WhatsApp for 'faster communication.' On WhatsApp, they share screenshots of their inventory and propose terms.
The victim is asked to transfer their item or account credentials first, with payment to follow via a screenshot or a PayPal claim that reverses. Some scammers create a false urgency by claiming they are going offline and must complete the trade now.
Other variants involve a scammer claiming they cannot access the game's trading system and asking the victim to share their item through a third-party method — all of which ultimately involve the victim losing the item without receiving anything in return.
Common red flags
- Trade partner insists on moving to WhatsApp rather than using the game's own trading system
- Any request to transfer items or credentials before payment is confirmed in your wallet
- Payment 'proof' provided as a WhatsApp screenshot rather than a verifiable transaction
- Extreme urgency around completing the trade before the partner 'goes offline'
- Partner refuses to use the game's official escrow or safe-trade features
- WhatsApp number was given out in a Discord server or game chat by someone you do not know
How to protect yourself
- Refuse any trade partner who asks to move the negotiation to WhatsApp
- Use only the game's official built-in trading system for all item exchanges
- Require payment confirmation in your own wallet before releasing any item
- Screenshot all communications on every platform used during a high-value trade
- Verify the partner's identity through multiple long-standing community channels
- Report any player who attempts to move trades off-platform to the game's moderation team
How to report it
- Report the WhatsApp number via 'Report Contact' in the chat
- Report the player to the game's moderation or support team for off-platform solicitation
- Warn the community in legitimate forums to prevent further victims
Frequently asked questions
Why would a legitimate trader want to move to WhatsApp?
There is almost no legitimate reason. Some players use WhatsApp to coordinate timing for in-game trades, but the trade itself should always execute through the game's official system. Any request to use WhatsApp for the actual item exchange is a strong fraud signal.
