In-Game Item Trading Scams on Telegram
Telegram groups and bots posing as game trading hubs facilitate item-swap scams where victims send valuable in-game assets and receive nothing in return.

Telegram's group and channel infrastructure hosts large communities of traders for games with player-driven economies. The platform's lack of buyer-protection mechanisms and the ease of creating throwaway accounts make it attractive to scammers who set up convincing trading bots and communities.
Victims are often directed to Telegram from in-game chats or Discord servers by scammers who prefer Telegram's encryption and account anonymity, making it harder to trace fraud and easier to disappear after a successful theft.
How this scam works on Telegram
Scammers run Telegram channels styled as premium trading communities with pinned rate cards and ongoing transaction logs. A bot handles 'trades,' collecting the victim's item details — trade URL, inventory screenshot — and promising to match them with a buyer within minutes.
After the victim 'sends' the item by approving a trade request prompted by the bot, the confirmation message claims the payment is processing. It never arrives. The bot account and channel disappear or are replaced with a new identity.
Another variant involves high-value item negotiations conducted over Telegram DM. The buyer sends a convincing payment proof screenshot, then claims the item did not arrive — reversing the social pressure to force the seller to re-send or refund.
Common red flags
- Trading bot requires you to approve trade requests to an unverified account
- Community appeared recently with no verifiable long-term history
- Bot claims to hold items in 'escrow' but is not associated with any official platform
- Payment proof provided via screenshot rather than verifiable blockchain or platform transaction ID
- Channel admins are difficult to contact outside automated bot responses
- Trade partner wants to move negotiations from a game's official trading system to Telegram
How to protect yourself
- Prefer official in-game or publisher-hosted trading systems over third-party Telegram bots
- Verify community legitimacy by cross-referencing with established game forum recommendations
- Never approve a trade request initiated by an unverified Telegram bot
- Require verifiable proof of payment (on-chain transaction hash or platform reference) before releasing an item
- Screenshot all trade negotiations in case you need to raise a dispute
- Ask an independent moderator from a recognised community to observe high-value trades
How to report it
- Report the channel or bot to Telegram via Settings > Report and select 'Scam'
- Notify the game publisher's support team so they can flag the offending trade accounts
- Post a warning in legitimate community spaces to protect other players
Frequently asked questions
Are there legitimate Telegram groups for game trading?
Yes, but they tend to be affiliated with known communities and have verifiable admin histories. The risk is highest when you are introduced to a new group through an unknown party during an active trade negotiation.
