Revolut's built-in cryptocurrency purchase feature and its reputation as a modern fintech have made it a favoured on-ramp for investment fraudsters targeting European and UK victims. Scammers direct victims to buy crypto through Revolut — which is a familiar, trusted interface — and then transfer the purchased tokens to an external address controlled by the fraudulent platform.
This two-step method exploits the victim's comfort with the Revolut brand. By the time funds reach the fraudulent platform, they are outside Revolut's ecosystem and beyond its recovery tools.
How this scam works on Revolut
Victims encounter a fraudulent investment opportunity through Instagram ads, Telegram groups, or unsolicited WhatsApp messages. They are told that the easiest way to fund their account is to purchase Bitcoin or USDT through Revolut and send it to the provided wallet address. The platform shows impressive returns on a polished dashboard.
Withdrawal attempts generate demands for Revolut-purchased crypto to cover 'compliance deposits' or 'tax clearance'. Each new fee is paid in crypto purchased via Revolut and transferred out of the app. The platform eventually becomes unreachable.
Common red flags
- Investment platform that specifically instructs you to purchase crypto through Revolut and send to an external wallet
- External wallet address provided by a platform with no regulatory registration
- Revolut crypto purchase followed immediately by an outbound transfer to an unknown address
- Returns on the investment platform far exceed market rates
- Withdrawal triggers new deposit demands framed as regulatory or tax requirements
- All communication through WhatsApp or Telegram — no verifiable business contact
How to protect yourself
- Sending crypto purchased through Revolut to an external wallet removes it from all consumer protections — treat such requests with extreme caution
- Verify any investment platform against the FCA register (UK), CySEC (Cyprus), or your national financial regulator
- Test any platform with a withdrawal before making further deposits
- Never follow investment instructions from contacts made through social media without independent verification
- If asked to pay a fee to release profits, stop immediately — this is a recovery-fee trap
How to report it
- Report the investment platform to the FCA at fca.org.uk/consumers/report-scam-us or your national regulator
- Report the fraudulent wallet address to Action Fraud (UK) at actionfraud.police.uk with transaction records
- Report the Revolut account through which instructions were given to Revolut's fraud team
Frequently asked questions
Is crypto purchased through Revolut protected if the recipient is fraudulent?
No. Once crypto is transferred from Revolut to an external wallet, it is beyond Revolut's control. Revolut's cryptocurrency purchase feature is not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) in the UK, and the company has no ability to reverse on-chain transfers. Report the receiving wallet address to Revolut and law enforcement for intelligence purposes, but expect no financial recovery.
