Pig-butchering scams have become a significant concern for the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC), which publishes a growing list of warnings against unauthorised investment platforms. Greek victims are predominantly contacted through Facebook, where criminal groups use Greek-speaking operators and Greek-themed social personas to build trust.
The Cybercrime Division of the Hellenic Police (ΕΔΔΑ) reports that Greek victims — disproportionately middle-aged professionals and retirees — are lured through Facebook ads featuring fake testimonials from recognisable Greek public figures, into platforms that appear to be HCMC or EU-regulated.
How this scam works on Greece
A Greek-language Facebook ad or WhatsApp message invites the recipient to join an investment group where they can learn crypto trading from a 'Έλληνας trader' (Greek trader) based in Switzerland or the UK. The group appears active, with members posting profit screenshots in Greek.
Deposits are collected via SEPA bank transfer or through crypto purchased at Greek Bitcoin ATMs. The platform shows growing balances in euros. An initial test withdrawal of €200–€500 is sometimes permitted to establish trust before larger deposits are encouraged.
Withdrawal of larger sums is blocked by a request for a 'φόρος κεφαλαιακών κερδών' (capital gains tax) or 'HCMC clearance certificate', invented to extract further payments before the platform disappears.
