Indonesia is one of Southeast Asia's most heavily targeted countries for pig-butchering scams, with Bareskrim (Indonesia's national detective agency) reporting a sharp rise in investment fraud cases linked to this scheme. The country's youthful, digitally-active population, high WhatsApp penetration, and growing interest in cryptocurrency create ideal conditions for these long-con frauds.
Fraudsters approach Indonesian victims on WhatsApp, LINE, Telegram, and dating apps. Operations are frequently conducted in Bahasa Indonesia by Indonesian-speaking agents or through translation tools, making the fraud highly convincing.
How this scam works on Indonesia
Initial contact is typically a 'wrong number' WhatsApp or LINE message from someone presenting as a successful Indonesian entrepreneur or a Sino-Indonesian diaspora professional. After weeks of friendly relationship-building, the contact introduces their supposedly profitable crypto trading platform.
Victims deposit rupiah through bank transfers to Indonesian accounts that immediately convert funds to cryptocurrency and move them offshore. The platform — mimicking licensed Indonesian exchanges like Indodax or Pintu — shows rising profits. Withdrawal attempts trigger demands for pajak penghasilan (income tax) prepayments or verification fees in rupiah or USDT.
Some victims have been approached through Muslim community groups and pesantren alumni WhatsApp networks, with fraudsters presenting investments as halal profit-sharing schemes.
Common red flags
- Unsolicited WhatsApp or LINE message from an unknown contact who quickly shifts to investment topics
- Trading platform not registered with Indonesia's OJK (Otoritas Jasa Keuangan)
- Promised returns far exceeding those of legitimate OJK-registered products
- Rupiah transfer requested to a personal account rather than a verified exchange
- Tax or fee demanded in rupiah or crypto before any withdrawal is processed
- Investment framed as a halal profit-sharing scheme without OJK sharia product registration
How to protect yourself
- Verify any investment platform's registration with OJK at ojk.go.id before depositing
- Check OJK's list of illegal investment entities at sikapiuangmu.ojk.go.id
- Only buy cryptocurrency through platforms registered with Bappebti (commodity futures regulator)
- Never transfer rupiah to personal accounts for investment purposes
